Sleeves On Saturdays

The Shirred Wrist Sleeve has been a very popular sleeve, repinned quite a bit on Pinterest. You can find the original post here along with all the drafting instructions, http://rhondabuss.blogspot.com/2012/05/sleeves-on-saturdays_26.html
The sleeve has shirring with a non-shirred center section.
I posted the sleeve 2 years ago and....I  actually just finished the top!! How's that for unfinished projects??? And now true confessions, I have older projects sitting around as well. Oh well, I'm human ;)
I thought I would post the top so you can see how the sleeves look on a finished garment. To tie in the sleeves and give a little more interest to the top, I added a shirred detail around the neckline.
The sleeve is not hemmed in a transitional manner as I didn't want a band or a stitching line around the bottom of the sleeve. In the picture below, you can see that my hand is inside the hem and it is attached at the seam line.
To do this, simply turn the hem up the desired amount,(I need to clip my threads!!)
put your hand inside the hem and grab the folded seam allowance and pull it to the outside. Stitch directly on the original seam line. This was done to all 3 seam lines. Remember, there's the underarm seam and the 2 shirred detail seams.
As I said, this is a great way to hem sleeves when you would rather not have a stitching line. It also works well for holding down a turtle neck collar.
This sleeve will work on just about any project, top, dress, or jacket. It's a quick and easy project to draft.

  2. Hi, Rhonda- your top is gorgeous. Am I correct that the sample pattern shown on the other post isn't the exact pattern for this sleeve (2 in tab vs. this sleeve which looks like the shirring is maybe 4-5 inches?). And would you be willing to tell us how to do the neckline?

    1. Hi Susan, I think that what I should have said in the original post is that 2" would be the least amount that you would want for the detail. You are right, my tab is about 5" long, and it can be longer if you would like. The tutorial on how to do the shirring is coming :)

    2. Thank you! This top is beautiful. Can't wait for the shirring tutorial. I almost understand the sleeve technique, I think. I definitely going to give it a try.

  5. You do realize we're all looking for a tute on that great neckline, right? I've been trying to figure it out...at first I thought it would be simple, but when I see how nicely those gathers are lined up, I'm not so sure...

    1. Yep, I do :) I'm going to try and do a video tutorial for this. I've been wanting to and this would be a good reason to give it a try. It really was quite easy to do.
