The Pepernoot Coat From Waffle Patterns/My Next Sew Along For Sew News

When I first came back to Chicago after living in Houston, Texas for 6 years, I had 1 coat...1, and it was what I would now call a fall coat. That first winter, we had temperatures in the 70's on Christmas day. I remember thinking,"this isn't so bad, I can do this." Well, within a month, I was standing on the el platform, waiting for my train and thinking that I was going to die, literally die. I was that cold. Now I have a closet full of coats, a coat for rain, a couple of coats for spring, a couple of coats for fall, and a number of coats for the winter. The day that I stood on that el platform freezing to death, like Scarlet O'Hara who vowed she would never go hungry again, (from the movie Gone With The Wind), I vowed that I would never be so cold ever again. If need be, I could give up a lot of things in my wardrobe, but not my coats!

When Sew News asked me to do another year of sew along articles, they asked me to choose a number of patterns that I might like to work with. I absolutely adore Yuki from Waffle Patterns. I love her style, and I love her patterns, so I was especially excited when Sew News took me up on my suggestion of Yuki's Pepernoot Hooded Coat. Yuki's version is intended for winter with the fur trimmed hood and the heavier wool fabric.
I bet you recognize the fabric I used! Since Yuki showed a winter version, I thought it would be fun to show more of a spring/fall version of the coat. But if you live in a warmer climate, this might suffice as a winter coat. I cannot wait to start wearing this coat!
It has a front hidden zipper placket. You might think that the zipper will be a little intimidating. During the sew along, we'll walk through it and I know you will have a beautiful application.
Just a note on the zipper that I used. This is one that actually seals when zipped up, so no air gets through. Another nice aspect of the zipper is that you don't see the zipper teeth, so it's a very clean finish on the outside. As we approach the sew along, I'll give you more info on the zipper.
The pattern features a fabulous hood. I really like how it is drafted. It's a 3-piece pattern, so when the hood is up, it lays smoothly over the top of the head.
When not in use, the hood lays beautifully across the back.
The coat features front and back yokes. I accented the yokes with piping.
Such a pretty look across the back.
The pockets are actually a patch pocket with a zipper detail. Again, the zipper may seem a little intimidating, but we'll walk through it step by step.
The sleeves are a 2-piece sleeve pattern and feature tabs. The tabs are not functional, although, you could always add a buttonhole if you wish.
The coat is fully lined and comes with a separate lining pattern. I had this fun piece of silk that I used for my lining. I always enjoy adding something a little unexpected :)
Waffle patterns are PDF patterns. I know that a few of you are cringing at the thought, but no need. Yuki has designed her patterns so that when you receive the file, you can choose the size you wish, so no going blind trying to follow the line for your size. The patterns also come with a copy shop option. Just download the pattern to a stick, stop by the copy shop and have them print it off on one of their big machines. No taping, no printing out tons of sheets at home. But that option is available, so if you like printing at home and you don't mind taping, have at it!
Once you do receive your pattern, please pay close attention to the sizing. There is quite a bit of ease in the patterns.
So, I have a question for you, for the sew along, would you like to see me do zip out faux fur lining? I think it might be rather fun.

I have not received the start date of the sew along, but I should have it in the next day or two. I have a feeling it will probably be in February. If you think you might like to sew along with me, and make a fabulous coat, hop over to Waffle patterns and pick up your pattern. You can find it HERE.
Yuki has a new coat pattern that you might like to take a look at, she's calling it the Yuzu Raglan Coat. It's a little like a pea coat with raglan sleeves. I really like the high collar and the overall shape of the coat. You can find it HERE.
I'm really looking forward to the Pepernoot sew along. As soon as I know a little more, I'll let you know.
Rhonda

  2. Yuki's patterns (and personality) are awesome! I remember "finding" her when I was looking for a hat pattern and hers was free. I made it up and it was too small but I didn't understand how/where to enlarge it. She asked for my head measurement and sent me a new file with a larger pattern! I was totally sold after that :)

I love. love. love the Pepernoot. I almost bought it but was thinking coat+PDF=no thanks. Didn't realize there was a copyshop option.

I'll be watching from the sidelines and maybe sewing one later :)

  3. I really love this coat, actually both coat patterns but I am also put off by pdfs. Never taken a pattern to be printed before though. I would really love to make a winter coat for my Mum. Xx

    1. Getting a large scale pattern printed at the copy shop is so easy. Just download it to a stick and then let them do the printing. An absolute breeze!

  4. Rhonda, I have never made a coat but want to and I'm sure your sew along would be incredibly helpful. I'm not an inexperienced sewer, just never made a coat. Do you think it's doable? Does the pattern involve sleeveheads and pad stitching (I don't even understand exactly what that is!) and if it does, will you be giving instructions for that? I'd love to sew along but don't want my first coat to be really frustrating.

    1. This is not a difficult coat to make, no pad stitching, no shoulder heads or shoulder pads. The only thing is the zippers, but slow and easy wins the game. The center zipper is really a snap. I would suggest doing a trial version of the zippered pockets before taking in the real thing. But I wouldn't shy away from making a coat as you'll see that it may stretch you a bit, but in a very good way :)

    2. You may have convinced me! Thanks.

    3. Good :) I love to see someone stretch their skills. And the nice thing about this coat is that it won't be a huge stretch, just the zippers. And like I said, they aren't that difficult.

  5. Your coat is simply chic and so well sewn! I love the piping detail which works well with the dramatic fabric. Karen

  6. What a lovely coat. Your sew a long will really help less confident sewers realise that they CAN achieve a coat they can be proud of. Stay warm out there!

    1. Thank you Yuki!!! For the sew along, I bought this rather wild fabric. It has a black background with big cobalt blue cotton sateen flowers throughout. I am thinking of doing a zip out faux fur lining, just adding another elimate to an already fabulous design. So happy I could showcase your pattern Yuki :)

  8. Your coat is lovely! You know I have coats on my mind right now. If I hadn't purchased that Kwik Sew pattern I may have had to make this one instead. Hum, I wonder if I could justify 2 new coats. LOL
I vote for you to do the zip out lining. That way you could make the coat into more of a 3-in-1. Do a waterproof outside coat, warm lining, the possibilities are endless.

    1. Hey, you live in a cold climate, I think you deserve 2 new coats :) I purchased a really great piece of fabric. It's a little wild, black background with embossed cobalt blue cotton velvet flowers throughout. If I do use the fabric, this will be a coat that will make me stand out in the crowd! I also bought a lovely black faux fur to do a zip out lining. A little extra work, but I think it might be a lot of fun.

  9. Rhonda - I love the coat and the fabric! Where is the fabric from? Thanks, Sharon

  10. Hi Sharon, believe it or not, the fabric is actually home dec. I love the home dec department as I can find interesting pieces there, more so than in the regular fabric section. I bought the fabric at Joann Fabrics. I'm not sure if you are in America, but I always try and use items that are easily obtainable for the sew alongs as I want everyone to be able to put together a fabulous garment without going crazy trying to find the supplies that I used.

    1. I love the home dec fabrics at JAs and have made many a garment from them. I always prewash and dry, do you?

    2. Thanks, Rhonda! I will check it out.

    3. HI Bunny, It all depends on the fabric. With this< i did not prewash as I will send the coat to the cleaners when it needs cleaning. But with that said, I do a lot of spot cleaning and steaming, so my trips to the cleaners are not that often.

  12. Oh these are lovely, and now I want to make the peppernoot, the yuzu AND the bomber jacket!! How did I miss waffle patterns up until now? I have some nice blue raincoat fabric that I've been saving for the right pattern so I'll be joining the sewalong and I love the idea of making a renovable warm lining although I may use fleece.

  13. I love the shapes of the two coats you've shown from Yuki. I may jump that PDF broom yet!

  14. I wasn't aware of Waffle Patterns - this coat is lovely! I might actually participate in your sew along for the first time! Even though I hate PDF patterns :-) Personally I think the zip out faux fur lining would be awesome! But then I live in a cold climate and am currently wearing my coat for the below-zero-every-day-for-too-long weather we're experiencing.

  15. Ms. Rhonda. I love, love your new coat. When I saw it on Facebook, immediately said to myself, "Get the fabric from Joann's when it's on sale." See you soon. ;-)
