A Look Back At A Fabulous Free Pattern Friday Piece

Some months back I posted this as one of our Free Pattern Friday pieces. You can see the post on how to do this piece here.
It was meant to be a negligee, but a number of people have posted it as a possible maxi. I always feel quite honored when anyone likes what I've done, but I felt that this was a little too lacking of fabric to be worn as a maxi.
My husband and I took our students out for a ride on our pontoon boat while they were visiting.
It was an a very hot day and I wanted to be cool. As I was thinking about what I would throw on, I came across the maxi/negligee and decided to give it a try.
As you can see, I wore a bandeau top underneath the dress. Look at the seat I'm sitting on. The raccoons got on the boat one winter and dug a few holes in the seats. You would be surprised just how much wild life we have in our yard and we are right in the middle of the city. Not only raccoons, but opossums, rabbits galore, beavers, and even coyotes believe it or not.
Chicago is a beautiful city. Marina Towers above.
The Wrigley Building. It's called the building that was built by chewing gum.
Trump Tower.
 So many tour boats.
The double decker Michigan Ave. Bridge.
 The Chicago Tribune Tower.
 Kayakers.
Another tour boat.
Flowers are everywhere.
The Chicago Tribune Tower in the distance.
The piece is super comfortable, .....on a boat, okay, but I don't think I would feel comfortable to walk around wearing this as a dress. I think I'll keep it in the bedroom from now on out!!
You can see the chew holes in the seats here as well. Destructive little suckers!! We discovered that they, as I, hate the smell of moth balls. So now when we get the boat ready for winter we put a box of moth balls on the boat and they stay away. Easy solution!!
Have a wonderful day!

  1. First of all, great tip about moth balls and raccoons! I also live in a city and the raccoons definitely visit.

Second, that dress is so cute with that bandeau top underneath! A great idea!

Finally, what a great outing! What great views!

  2. What a fun way to share the city with your visitors....from your pontoon boat! My daughters live in Chicago, and I visit often. It's been 7 years already since the oldest moved there, and we still find fun and exciting things to do! Looking forward to my next visit in Oct for Vogue Knitting Live!

Love your maxi, but agree with you that I would wear it more at home or on the boat. I love the style, and pairing it with the bandeau top was a perfect idea!

  3. Cute dress, and I enjoyed the boat tour! Darn raccoons. I have trouble with the squirrels digging in my plants. I wonder if they would like a little moth ball action??

    1. I also have a problem with rabbits. One morning I went out and they had snapped off the flowers on my daises. Left the stems and just took the flowers. I was so angry. So I sprinkled moth balls all around my daises and they left them alone. I would think that the squirrels would not like the moth balls as well. Give it a try!
