The Sewn Square One Upline Jacket

The October/November issue of Sew News is out and I have a magazine to give away!!!

This issue is all about getting in gear for fall. On the cover you see a fabulous jacket that was designed by Ana Jankovic. In her article, she takes you step by step through the process of creating a double lapel. The back is just as nice as the front.

There's nothing like a little drop in temperature to make us start thinking about wearing wool and possibly a plaid pattern. There's a wonderful article on taking a simple straight skirt pattern and turning it into a kilt style skirt, with buckles and all!

There's no time like fall to think about tuning up our machines. You'll also find a very helpful article on serger maintenance.
There are a number of other helpful and interesting articles, but I don't want to spoil the surprise, so you'll just have to get the magazine and see for yourself.
The next Sew News hosted sew along that I will be doing is this fun jacket from Sewn Square One. It's an urban outer piece that's great with jeans, slacks and skirts. The pattern comes with 3 length options as well as a center front button or zipper option. For my test run, I chose to make the shortest version with a center front zipper. The collar can be worn open, as you see below.
Or completely zipped closed.
The pattern features a curved princess line seam with pockets. The pockets are a breeze to make.
I made a couple of very minor changes to the pattern. If you look closely at my jacket, you'll see that the zipper runs all the way to the hem.
Look at the zipper on the pattern cover and you'll see that it's about 2" short of the hem. It's fine, I just liked the clean finish of the zipper stopping at the hem. I'll go over the other changes I made once the sew along begins.

As you can see from the pattern covers, there are 3 possible options, short, hip and mid thigh lengths. For the sew along, I will be making the mid thigh length. But rather than the buttoned front, I will be inserting a center front zipper.

If you would like to win a copy of the magazine, just leave a message on this post. I'll draw the winning name on Monday, October 5, 2015.
Good Luck!

  3. I'll confess: the triangle bound buttonholes sound intriguing. Fascinating, really. May I have that copy, please? And I love the curved princess seams and the raglan sleeves of that jacket. Autumn! I need more time to sew!

  8. I have seen this pattern before, but didn't pay much attention to it. I really like your sample jacket, and I think it would be fun to sew up.

  9. I suspect that there is a world of inspiration in the Sew News magazine...maybe I will be the lucky winner? Of course, reading your posts, pretty much every day here on your blog is a winner...

  10. Rhonda, That is one of the most beautiful examples of this pattern I have seen. Wow! I look forward to the sew along and will be thinking about modifications I would need for Arizona climate.

    1. Thanks Mary :)
I made a very warm version, ultra suede, along with a warm lining. Not at all good for the Arizona climate. A denim jacket would be fun.

  13. Would love to win the magazine because I need to make a new winter 3/4 jacket and it would be such fun to do the sew along. The pattern is just what I have been looking for. Unfortunately Sew News is not widely available in Europe where I live.

  16. I've made the Upline a couple of times in a length a tad longer than hip length as a barn coat. It's a fun pattern and well drafted but the pockets are skimpy. I drafted and added bigger patch pockets, perfect for holding gloves, pliers and the all important carrots. ;-)

    1. I found the pocket to be fine, but then I'm not carrying pliers, gloves and carrots ;) Actually, they would have been a little too shallow if I had followed the topstitching instructions. You may have noticed that I only topstitched the zipper and did not add the extra rows.

  23. Count me in for the drawing! I love your sew alongs. I wish I could do one, but my sewing plans and work schedule (and family) don't always align well with them. Do you archive the links to the sew alongs so someone could do one later? I've got four of your sew alongs right now I want to do...

    1. Hi Suzanne, I am going to create a page on the blog that will easily allow you to find the sew along posts. Thanks for giving me the kick I needed to get this done. Should be up in a few days. I'll do a post when the page is up and available.

  28. I'd love to win this issue. The triangular buttonholes is something I would love to get a closer look at and to try. The next sew-along pattern has everything: raglan sleeves, princess seams, and a fun collar. I'm definitely following along on this one. Hope they cover FBA on the princess seam - something I haven't mastered yet.

  30. Here in Hawaii, Cosplay is big! An upcoming event is having a costume competition and I was amazed when I saw that first place prize was a sewing machine. I'm not entering but will be following the event to see who wins. Just like I'd like to win this magazine :)

  31. I would love a copy of the magazine. My library has a subscription but it is so popular I'm lucky to find 2 or 3 issues out of the year they keep on hand. I should ask if they sell the old ones and if I can put my name on the ones I want. I love your jacket and would make the middle length. Is the pattern available now or not until the sew along?

  32. I answered my question by clicking on the link for the pattern :)
