One of the perks of being chosen as one of Burda's Top 50 Bloggers is receiving 5 free Burda patterns. Now, I must confess, I have never used a Burda pattern. How could I have possibly gotten to this point in my life and never used a Burda pattern?!!! Well, that's about to end and I am super excited about the patterns that I chose
First up is this fabulous motorcycle jacket. I love the lines and the collar.
I thought this pair of pants was rather interesting. I actually tried a pair on that was very much like this pant while I was in Houston. So I at least have an idea of how they will fit.
You can find the pattern here, http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/crossover-pants-112013
I LOVE this cape and it will be the first piece that I make. Great for throwing on over just about anything.
Here's a link to that pattern, http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/drawstring-cape-032013
The last 2 patterns that I chose are from the same collection.
I really like this blouse. It will work with skirts, jeans and look great under a jacket. You can find the pattern here, http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/gathered-shirt-blouse-102012
The pocket detail on this skirt is what drew me in.
Here's the link to the pattern, http://www.burdastyle.com/pattern_store/patterns/flared-skirt-102012I can't wait to sink my teeth into this pattern.
As I said, I really liked all the patterns from this collection and I think I will purchase the pattern below. What a cute topper for skinny pants. You can see the entire collection here.
Many of you have lots of Burda experience. Do you have any advice you might like to pass along???
No Burda experience to offer, but want to say your slender figure and substantial skills will make you a showpiece for Burda patterns. I'm eager to see them made up, on you.
ReplyDeleteI have made a few Burda and have that middle top in my stash. I find that Burda are more likely to fit than the big 4. They are my preferred pattern brand.
ReplyDeleteThanks Vicki, that's rather exciting news. I'm looking forward to giving them a try.
DeleteI've found them to be quite good, though I haven't made that many... I love the pants, I've seen a few on offer ready-made and wondered how'd they'd go on me, interesting that they are on offer by Burda... thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI like Burda a lot, for the fit and for the little details that make the garments interesting. Also I think they're drafted very well and I don't think I've ever encountered errors or pattern pieces that didn't quite fit together right. Are these the PDF downloads? If so, I think the instructions are beefed up a bit from when they were published in the magazine, which is good because the magazine instructions are pretty sparse. Also, the PDF instructions may have had a bit more proofing for English. Since they're originally in German the translation can be a tad off sometimes. The instructions they give also don't result in couture garments. There may be finishes or seam treatments that you would might want to do differently. Burda are my "go to" patterns. I now buy the magazine in German, and I'm "relearning" how to sew by translating some instruction magazines they published a couple years ago.,
ReplyDeleteOh, Rhonda, some great patterns! Looking forward to seeing your creations!
ReplyDeleteLove the patterns you chose! I haven't used any Burda Style patterns, as they don't come close to my plus size. I did see two tops in the current issue I'd like to make for my size 10-ish sister, so I'll be venturing into Burdaland along with you!
ReplyDeleteI love your choices! I sew a good amount of Burda. The fit is much closer to my measurements than Big 4. My only advice would be to read, but then ignore the instructions. They are usually unintelligible.
ReplyDeleteSince you're getting. Pdf patterns you don't have to deal with the tracing. Burda is fairly well drafted and if you use their instructions on choosing your size, it works!
ReplyDeleteI meant to make the weird hip-wrap thing early this year and even bought fabrics for it. I should make it :-)
Those pants and the skirt with the pocket detail are awesome. I personally rather like the cut of all the Burda patterns I have sewn with, especially the pants. Excessive ease is not too much a problem in my experience. I just don't like tracing, so usually if I really like something, I'll just download it anytime its needed.
ReplyDeleteCheck your size! I'm impressed with your pattern choices - I usually go for boxy, straight up and down styles from Burda.
ReplyDeleteI love burda patterns and you have made a terrific selection. My tip is to use a guide on your rotary cutter to add the seam allowce as you cut the pieces out. And of the instructions are nonsensical use a reference sewing book instead.
ReplyDeleteOMG, how can that be??!?!! You are going to look stunning in your Burdas! (I've loved Burda for years, though it isn't my first go-to pattern company, but they are very well drafted. I even like working with no seam allowances!)
ReplyDeleteI love the patterns and will go on line and purchase a couple of them for sure
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Burda patterns. They fit me really well. i usually make a 38 (US8) usually have no need to try the garment on until I am finished or nearly finished. Directions are sparce or difficult to interpret. Beginner may have a problem with this but if you are an advanced sewer this ia not a problem. I too loke the fact that the designs and details are more interesting than the big 4. I think I have been getting the Burda magazine since 2006 and using the patterns extensively. Happy Sewing!

ReplyDeleteI love Burda patterns but you need to utilize the pictures since details, at least in the magazine, are left out. The sloper fits me great and I have to do little adjustment. I like that the styles are spot-on for fashion.
ReplyDeletehello Rhonda,i am fan off Burda Patterns and my first experience was in 1980 (just married) in bying my first magasine in german. The main problem: i don't read german, but a few explanations was in french and nearly clear. And now,a long time after,i like always it !I am very proud to understand some words in that language too.The patterns fit very well ,but as Feistylady says, you may have some notions in sewing.Happy sewing without trying.
ReplyDeleteIt's always pleasing to have to do far fewer pattern fitting alterations with Burda (and other European drafted patterns) compared with the Big 4 and they're less likely to have the acres of unnecessary ease or huge armholes. It's worth checking measurements and sizing.
ReplyDeleteThe sewing methods and assembly instructions for several Burda garment may be better subsituted by your own choices rather than slavishly following the script. Sometimes binding openings is a better finishing option than a plethora of facings, especially on the knits.
My last Burda make was the (freebie) Naomi jacket/shirt and after a couple of tweaks to my neckline and putting a fixed stay to hold the shape rather than threading a tie, I love it. Try it, it would look fabulous on you.
Happy sewing from Morgan
Looking forward to seeing these styles on you, Rhonda. No tips for you, though, as I have only sewn one Burda that I can recall, and it was a child's pant pattern. I do have the magazine with all those patterns, though!!
ReplyDeleteMy go to patterns are from the Burda Style monthly magazine, English version. The annual subscription is $90 and well worth it. I really don't mind the tracing; your eyes get used to it . I save every issue; I probably have eight to ten years worth of issues, and I refer back to the old ones regularly. Excellent style and fit.
ReplyDeleteI really like the white top. I think I have that pattern in the new U.S. Burda, must think about making it up.
