For a Dress That's Fast To Make and Looks Great, Vogue 1250

A few years back, almost everyone in the internet sewing world was making Vogue 1250. This pattern must have been the hit that a pattern company dreams of having as so many were sold. The dress is made up of just 2 pattern pieces. The front, which is 1 piece, but it also wraps around for the back skirt. The second piece of the pattern is the back bodice. That's it. So it's a very fast make and I might add, a very forgiving design as well. Because of all the front drapes, you really don't need a perfect figure, and to be honest, who has a perfect figure?
I needed(wanted) a new dress for a function that I will be attending and I really didn't have a lot of time to put something together. Vogue 1250 wasn't actually my first choice, but I ended up choosing the pattern because of the amount of fabric that I had.
I found this pair of shoes, purely by accident, as I wasn't looking for a new pair of glitzy evening shoes. But when I saw them, I immediately thought of the fabric that I've had for quite some time and thought that the 2 might work well together, and too, the shoes were marked down to only $15.00!!! For some reason, the shoes photographed lighter than they are and the fabric darker. The fabric is a navy blue knit with gold lurex threads.
The bodice of this dress drapes beautifully.
The full length. As you can see from the pattern, I had to add to the length of the pattern in order to have a long dress. Not an issue of course.
I added a slight fishtail to the center back seam of the dress to give it plenty of room for walking.

I'm super happy with the dress. If you like a front drape, get this pattern. Like I said, it is so very easy to make, and it's great for everything, from a casual summer dress to an evening gown.
Once I finished the dress, I remembered that Liana of Sew Intriguing made the dress up as an evening gown. You can see her post HERE.
This is one pattern that truly has the Rhonda seal of approval....as if it needed it!!!!
As soon as I wear the dress, I'll get pictures of me in it and post them. If I may say so myself, it really looks great on.

  1. What an awesome dress Rhonda. The shoes are killer too. I have glitter shoes, it's like a disco ball on your feet. Hope you have a great time at the event you're going to.

    1. I wore the dress last night, felt like I was wearing a nightgown, especially since there's no boning. Received lots of lovely compliments. Now I want another!!

  4. I love this pattern so much that I've made 9 versions of them - even a maxi length - not an evening gown length as you have. Love your fabric and shoe choice for this version! I'm sure you're going to have a wonderful time in this very comfortable and elegant dress!

  5. I do love the front drape on V1250, and it's ease of construction! I adore your full length & fishtail, very stylish. One quick question - without a waist seam, was there anywhere to anchor the weight of the skirt, or was it ok? I worry about vertical stretch and potential wardrobe malfunctions ;)

    1. It really hasn't been a problem for me. I have a shorter length that has stretch in both the lengthwise and crosswise grain, and have not experienced it stretching on me. The fabric I used for this dress has no lengthwise stretch, just crosswise, so again, not an issue. But remember, there is a waist seam in the back.

    1. Thanks Ginger :) I had a lovely evening, great food, lovely music and great company. And even better, the dress was just kinda there, no thoughts of it for the entire evening!! So comfortable and easy to wear.

  7. Glorious. I made something very similar to yours for an evening event I also had little time to sew for. I used bronze lurex knit, turned it into a long skirt and added a godet at the back for walking ease. its a marvellous pattern. So excited that I have your good taste!

  9. Fabulous!! I made two summer dresses and also a tunic top from the pattern. Hmm, maybe it needs another version - something for winter that we are heading into.

  11. Gorgeous, Rhonda! And we must be on the same wavelength!!! I just bought this pattern in the last BMV sale! (It is still in print.) Like you, I remember the sewing internet blowing up with this pattern and I think I want to make one, though I don't think it will turn out as stunning as yours!!!

  12. I have had this pattern for a long time, and now I am inspired to make it. Love the fabric you chose. Since I rarely, if ever, get to go to something that requires or even lends itself to a long dress, I will make it in a short version. But love yours.

    1. You must make it up Jenny!! This is a style that will look sensational on you. I have a feeling that once you get 1 made, you'll do many more. It's so easy to wear and lends itself to casual as well as dressy.
I made one in black a while back and wear it quite often.

  13. Gorgeous! The fabric is fabulous and the shoes are great too. I like the fishtail addition to the back too, great idea. Who wants to fall because they can't walk in their exquisite dress? The drape is lovely.
