Fabulous Free Pattern Friday

This week has been just a bit too busy. I had promised to do a Fabulous Free Pattern Friday post yesterday, but the day got away from me and before I knew it, I was exhausted and fell into bed. I will do the Wednesday Showcase later this afternoon. Two fantastic ladies are coming up that I'm sure you will enjoy getting to know!
You probably remember the dressing gown I shared with you a few weeks ago,
this is the negligee that goes underneath.
I am so happy with how it turned out. So easy to do, just 3 rectangles. Just a little side note. A friend brought a piece to show me last weekend and she said, "it's just rectangles!" I love it. Hopefully we are all beginning to look at garments with a little different eye and see their simplicity.
A side view.
The back view.
A close up of the back. I decided to add the little bows as a nice little added touch. They are just tacked on.
The negligee and dressing gown together.
Okay, so how did I do it?
After I cut the dressing gown, I realized that I had just enough of the fabric left to do the negligee, and it's always a treat when I can use all of my fabric!
You will need your hip measurement, plus ease. Remember that you will be sleeping in this garment and there is nothing worse than trying to sleep in something that is tight. I also made mine quite long, so keep this in mind when you add your ease. You will also want to be able to walk in the garment. 10" of ease will allow you the ability to walk, but add more if you feel that more is better for you. So cut a rectangle the desired length by your desired width. The length is measured from just under the bust to whatever length you choose. I only have a center back seam in mine.

The 2 rectangles that go over the bust are determined by measuring across your bust. You will want the rectangle to be wide enough to comfortably fit over your entire breast, plus a little ease, at least 2". The length is from under your breast to however high you would like the piece to be. I added an 1 1/2" for my casing. The casing is what holds the straps that go over the shoulder.
The rectangle pieces that go over the bust were sewn on with the seams facing out. Once they were sewn on, I attached a contrasting bias tape that is sewn to the outside of the garment. You will thread your elastic through the bias casing. As for the straps, I folded my bias tape in half and sewed it together. I then threaded it through the casing I made for the front rectangles. You may need some help to determine the back length of you shoulder straps. Once you have determined the length of your straps, sew them to your casing in the back. If you like, tie little bows and tack them to the casing over the straps. And that's it, a negligee that even Natori would be proud of!
As always, if you have any questions, please email me, sewbussted@yahoo.com and I will do my best to help.
Have a wonderful day!

  1. I will be making this very soon. I have a few fabrics that are really only suitable for nighties, and I've been needing more. Thanks!
