Monday Morning Inspiration/Shirt Inspiration, Let's Borrow From The Boys

A few years ago, there was a commercial on television that I absolutely loved. The wife had called her husband. When he answered the telephone, he was standing there in a pair of sweatpants and a matching jacket. Apparently, it was the wife's birthday, she told him that she wanted to be taken out for dinner. She went on to tell him that she wanted him to wear a pair of pants that zipped, and a jacket that did not! Hilarious!!! While my husband is not a sweatpant kind of a guy, there have been times that I have told him that I would not leave the house with him if he did not change his clothes :/

While many of us have struggled with men who are happy to wear clothes that are far from inspirational, men's clothing can offer some fabulous ideas that we can incorporate into our own wardrobes.

I came across this Alexander McQueen men's shirt on Pinterest and thought it was amazing. What I especially like is the idea of using a border print in a regular button down type of a shirt. Makes a basic shirt really special.

Here's another. This time the border print is used top down.

Even in a t-shirt the border print looks great.

I loved the color blocking in this shirt.

Another color blocking idea. Love how it was taken into the sleeves.

A basic shirt that was given the look of a raglan sleeve. Here I love how the color blocking was taken into the collar. The front pocket also offers an interesting design detail.

What a great use of an old tie.

Check out the detail on this collar.

An interesting pocket surprise.

And finally, I love this shirt. Notice the flange on the front tab and how it was echoed in the pocket.

So, ideas for you, and if you are lucky, maybe a few ideas for your husband too!!!

Have a great week!
Rhonda

  1. What a feast for the eyes-thank you! I try and try to get my husband to agree to a few details in his shirts! But no, he wants x type of fabric, this type of fit, hemline just so, plain pockets and so on. The man has requirements!!

    1. I think this is the war cry of most married women :)

    2. Oh yes... we have joked that my hubby wants his clothes so conservative that he could be buried in them. No fancy colors, no details, nothing that hints of anything feminine in any way at all, etc.

  2. Love the pocket detail! That is an idea I could see using.

  4. Fabulous examples, Rhonda! Keeping in the guys' arena, my hubby often comments on the things I dabble in and often says wistfully, "I wouldn't mind something for me." But oh how I know this guy, and I hesitate to put a lot of effort into a garment that he'd likely not wear when all is said and done. This might just be the project, a win-win for both of us; a fun project for me to work on and a shirt I know he'd enjoy.

  5. Maybe I can have my daughter talk my son into wearing some of these---he would definitely be seen as fashion-forward by any discerning young woman!

  7. I am inspired by these details. Those border prints are TDF and I would love to get my hands on some of that quality. Thanks, Rhonda.

    1. If only we could get the people at Alexander McQueen to let go of some of that fabric!

  8. I'm always touched that Mr. Lucky enjoys wearing the shirts I have made him. Not sure he could get this "hip" but he has embraced the RTW mixed print detail in a few recent purchases. I adore the border prints but that would put him over the edge:-)

    1. I have been making "ski" shirts for my husband for a number of years. They are just basic shirts, but in fabric with a ski theme. He loves them, and loves the compliments. I'm thinking that I might be able to get away with a little hipper shirt as long as it's toned down. No way he's going for those little tiny collars ;) We have to move them along gently :)

  9. I love the border print shirts - in fact all of these have appeal. I'm not showing this post to The Management! I'd be busy for weeks!
I know what you mean about not wanting to go out sometimes with husbands as they are dressed. I have berated mine but he doesn't seem to care. I claim he has no sartorial gene 😉

  10. Great inspirations, Rhonda! I love them all (and agree 100% that it would be nice if the McQueen folks had any border print off-cuts or bolt ends to unload!) and think my husband would be very amenable to having some detailed shirts in his wardrobe. He has pretty good taste and likes to dress up--tie and all!--just because; I think the special contrast pieces in particular would be right up his alley!

    1. I too love the contest pieces. I'm going to try and get mine in one of those!! Fingers crossed, but he's fairly adventurous.
Hope your pup is doing well. I think we are probably in the last weeks with Miss Little Bit :(

  11. I'm glad men's wear is becoming more daring. Love those printed shirts - could give a whole new meaning to the "boyfriend" look. Steal his shirt and make it your own!!
